WHAT IS COMPREHENSIVE KM THINKING?
A comprehensive approach begins with the work statement, which makes it about business, sets priority, and drives identification of the “right” knowledge. The company’s work statement and strategic objectives also culturally transcend organizational silos – a key factor in cross-organizational collaboration. Unleashing an organization’s full potential means also considering US and Global compliance policies, existing IT and people-based systems in use by the workforce, preservation of critical business knowledge, corporate risk, leadership messages, the workforce culture, employee engagement, sharing vs. protecting intellectual property, privacy, employee performance management, retirement demographics, and integration of mergers and acquisitions.
All this, addressed together, makes a KM approach comprehensive. I believe a comprehensive KM approach will increase your organization’s performance through fully-engaged individual contributors who are enabled by the company’s strategic objectives, existing organizations, and “knowledge systems." Organizational knowledge will be more available, applied rapidly when and where it’s needed, in order to execute work statement productively and efficiently.
